"Sabbath"  - Hebrew that means to desist, stop, cease; sabbath abandons regular activity to make something else important.  Abraham Heschel reflected that sabbath is a season in which we turn from the world of creation to the Creator of the world.

The Holy Sabbath - Scripture records the establishment of a seventh day cessation of work to nurture a relationship with God.

The Vocational "Sabbatical"  - Leaders or educators typically take periodic sabbaticals for one or more of the following reasons:

Renewal. Ceasing the striving within one’s occupation while actively strengthening trust in the Living God.

Re-creation. Identifying and cultivating creative activities to energize one’s whole life perspective.

Reflection. Reading, study, research and/or writing focused on a significant area of learning.

Restoration. Physical and emotional rest to recover from a crisis.
